Pro Soccer Team attracts 550 fans, wins in its 2013 Canadian Soccer League Debut

Kingston, Ont. Sunday, May 5th – Kingston FC kicked off the 2013 Canadian Soccer League season at home with a 6-2 win over Brampton City United. There were 514 fans in attendance, with no clouds, little wind and 20 degree temperatures at West Campus Field.

The team struggled to start off the game, allowing a Brampton goal in the third minute of play.

After a Kingston FC giveaway in their own half, Brampton striker Brandon Simoes burst in on goal and slotted the ball past Kingston goalkeeper Jaroslav Tesar.

Kingston FC quickly regained momentum, converting an indirect free kick in the Brampton box in the 10th minute. Four minutes later, left midfielder Edgar Soglo raced down the sideline, beat a Brampton defender and created another scoring opportunity off a dangerous cross.

Soglo set up the equalizing goal in the 20th minute, tapping a pass to Kingston striker Guillaume Surot, who calmly threaded the ball into the left corner of the net. Kingston FC took the lead in the 30th minute on a goal from Romanian midfielder Catalin Lichioiu, who received a free-kick pass and capitalized from 18 yards out.

Kingston FC would add another marker before halftime, after Lichioiu was hauled down by a Brampton defender in the penalty area. Surot, a native of France, converted the ensuing penalty kick for his second goal of the game.

The play was relatively even to start the second half. Kingston FC defender Jacob O’Connor was physically dominant throughout the game, but was cautioned in the 57th minute for a hard tackle. Three minutes later, he made another aggressive tackle inside the Kingston FC box, avoiding a foul and breaking up a Brampton scoring chance.

Kingston FC widened their lead in the 73rd minute, after former Queen’s Gaels midfielder Nathan Klemencic sent Soglo on another break down the left side. Soglo eluded a defender and slotted a cross through to streaking midfielder Toni El-Asmar, who tapped in a goal from the six-yard box.

Central midfielder Jason Massie gave Kingston a 5-1 lead two minutes later, carrying the ball in unchallenged and burying a low shot. Brampton’s Marcos Nunes brought his team within three in the late stages of the game, cracking a high strike past Tesar in the 86th minute. Klemencic responded for Kingston just two minutes later, zipping past a defender and scoring to make it 6-2.

“Absolutely magnificent performance from the team, they brought everything we were looking for. Team stuck to the pattern of play we practiced in training. Stayed mentally strong, we had frequent shots at the goal and we denied opportunities. The football was a joy to watch,” said Kingston FC head coach Colm Muldoon.

Queen’s Gaels defender Joe Zupo made his CSL debut, anchoring Kingston’s back four alongside Queen’s University law student and Kingston FC captain Austin White. Zupo was replaced in the 78th minute by substitute defender Hugo Delmaire, a returning Kingston player.

“Joe Zupo from Queen’s did a great job in the centre back. Joe and Tony [El-Asmar], they were the dictators of the play, and the pace-setters of our game,” Muldoon said.

Striker Mademba Ba, Kingston FC’s leading scorer in 2012, entered the game for Surot midway through the second half, nearly converting on several scoring opportunities late in the match. The 6-2 result showed improvement from Kingston’s 3-2 victory in Brampton last season.

This week, Kingston takes on the Ottawa Fury of the PDL, with two upcoming fixtures on Tuesday and Wednesday at West Campus Field. Next weekend they’ll face two-time defending CSL champions Toronto Croatia next Sunday, May 12 on the road.

Following the first team’s win, Kingston FC’s reserves took on Brampton City United’s reserves in CSL second division play. Kingston’s reserves claimed a 3-2 win to start their CSL season at 1-0.

Their next home game is May 19 versus SC Burlington.
