After defeating second place Toronto Croatia 5-4 a week ago Kingston FC battled undefeated first place York Region to a 2-2 tie on Saturday.
But Kingston will need a third straight strong performance against Brampton in Brampton this Sunday if they are to have home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
The team has booked Richardson Stadium for Sunday October 12th.
Mademba Ba – starting for just the second time – scored both Kingston goals, giving Kingston a 1-0 and 2-1 lead. Ba had scored four of the five goals in Kingston’s five goal win over Croatia.
But York Region came back first with a penalty kick by Adrien Pena and then a shot off a header after a corner kick with 20 minutes to go.
York was awarded the penalty kick when an official ruled there had been a handball in the box.
It was only the second time all season York has given up two goals, the first was the opening game back in May when York defeated Kingston 3-2.
Kingston’s reserves – who have already clinched first place – also played to a 2-2 tie thanks to two goals by Stephane Assengue.
The reserves will have a home playoff on October 12th.
The first game ended with some name calling and pushing and shoving by the visitors and – as a result – a flurry of yellow and red cards. Red cards mean an automatic one-game suspension and a review by the league.
York Region will be without two of its players in its final regular season game and could end up short-handed for the first round of the playoffs.
