Four teams now in contention for first place at season’s midway mark, including Kingston FC

Kingston, Ont. Tuesday, July 16th, 2013–Halfway through the season, Kingston FC is in the thick of a four-way race for supremacy in the CSL. At the top of the table, only one point separates the four teams challenging for the coveted top spot.

After 11 games played through their 22-game season, Kingston is in second place for the first time since claiming first place in early May.

The York Region Shooters’ are tied in points, with stronger goal differential over Kingston, and the two will face each other September 22nd and October 6th. Toronto Croatia and Brampton City United both trail with 21 points apiece in a tie for third.

This Saturday evening, Kingston takes on the Serbian White Eagles – a team based out of Toronto currently in 10th place. After a stretch of home games in June, only four season games remain to be played at Queen’s West Campus field. With a 6-1 record on home turf, head coach Colm Muldoon stressed the importance of claiming all three points for each remaining home fixture.

“We need to win them all,” said the coach. “We’ve set goals. 11 remaining games total, we want nine wins, three draws. We’re not in cruise mode.”

As starting winger, Trenton native Nathan Klemencic remains sidelined, the injury list was lengthened following last Saturday’s 2-2 draw on the road versus the Windsor Stars.

Among the injured are league-leading goal-scorer Guillaume Surot, and key attacking midfielder Catalin Lichioiu – both hopeful to return before Sunday. Jordan Brooks is out long-term with a lower back injury, but fellow midfielder Paul Kiharra is set to return after being sidelined for weeks.

“We’re going to use the squad, because it’s good enough – and we’re also hoping certain players will be [fit to play],” Muldoon said.

Saturday’s kick-off versus the Serbian White Eagles is set for 5 p.m. at Queen’s University’s West Campus field. Following the match, Kingston FC’s reserve squad takes on Serbian White Eagles ‘B’ at 7:15 p.m. in CSL Second Division action.
